Dan's Rock Overlook - revisited

When I woke up this morning, the fog was so thick that I couldn't see across the street, so I knew it would be a great morning to get up above the fog for some picures. I threw the camera gear in the car & headed for Dan's Rock Overlook, just outside of Frostburg Maryland.

When I arrived, the moon was still out & a band of color was just appearing on the horizon. Within an hour, the color of the light changed quickly eventually becoming a rich gold color once the sun finally came up.

I was very color & very windy, but I'm happy with the shots. Here are a few....

An early frosty morning at Rocky Gap State Park

October 19th, the first frost of the year & a perfect morning to go on a photo shoot with a couple members of the Western Maryland Photographers Association. The conditions were spectacular, the lake was covered with a heavy mist & as the run rose, the lightly slowly worked its way down from the top of the mountain towards Lake Habeeb.

f16 - 1/15th second - ISO 400

Western Maryland Scenic Railroad - fall colors

Anyone who's been to my website knows that I like to photograph steam trains, specifically the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSR). Here's a shot of #734 passing through the Fall foliage near Parkersburg Road Bridge.

Settings - f2.8 / 1/500th shutter / ISO 200

Here's a shot of #502 right near Trimble Road in Mount Savage, Maryland.

Settings - f4.5 / 1/320th shutter / ISO 400

To see more Western Maryland Scenic Railroad shots, there's a large gallery here - WMSR photos.

Rocky Gap State Park - early autumn colors

The Fall colors are starting to spread more to the East. Rocky Gap State Park generally peaks in the last week of October, but some beautiful color is starting to appear at the shoreline of the lake.

View from the Top of the World (actually, Dan's Mountain Overlook)...

In my opinion, one of the most underrated locations in Western Maryland is Dan's Mountain Overlook, located just a few miles from Frostburg, Maryland. At 2,900 feet, it's not the highest point in the area, but for early-morning photography, it's hard to beat.

Western Maryland Fall color - (Casselman Bridge & pond abstracts)

These first three shots were taken at Casselman Bridge State Park shortly after sunset on Friday evening. All three images were shot with a +8 ND filter to further slow the shutter speed. Actual settings are below the images.

f8 / 3.2 second shutter / ISO 200

f16 / 3.2 second shutter / ISO 200

f16 / 4 second shutter / ISO 200

These three shots were at a pond in Western Maryland that was surrounded by beautiful foliage. These three shots were zoomed to 70 mm from the bank of the pond to capture the abstract reflections.

Western Maryland fall foliage (Oct'08) - Finzel Swamp

I took a drive to Finzel Swamp this evening, one of my favorite photography locations, to see the Fall colors. Here are a few shots from the visit, the colors are just starting to peak.

f16 / 1.6 sec shutter (with +8 ND filter & Polarizer) / ISO 400
ND filter was used because a slight breeze was blowing & I wanted to use a long shutter to capture the motion blur of the leaves.

f5.6 / 1/800th second / ISO 400

Late afternoon on the C&O Canal

Two images from my stroll on the C&O Canal this evening. There is still a lot of green in the trees, but many of the leaves are also starting to take on a yellow shade. It's starting to feel like Fall.

Harpers Ferry - thank you!

I'd like to take a moment to say a big 'thank you' to everyone who stopped by my booth at Harpers Ferry Mountain Heritage Festival this past weekend. This show is by far my favorite & it was great meeting so many people (and reacquainting with people that I met at previous festivals).

Quite a few people were telling me about where they were planning to hang their prints & it made me think about doing a "Where's it Hanging?" promotion, where you send me a picture of where your print is hanging & I would offer you some type of discount on future purchases. I'm still thinking through the logistics, so check back in a bit. I think this might be fun, I always enjoy hearing stories about where my prints end up & it would be very cool to actually see them in their new home.

Thanks again....
